Finn Valley was commissioned by Abergeldie Complex Infrastructure to carry out extensive repair works on the Merriwa Road level crossing in Denman. The project was part of a critical infrastructure improvement initiative aimed at enhancing the safety and reliability of the crossing.

The comprehensive scope of the works included the following key activities:

• The initial phase involved the complete removal of the existing level crossing infrastructure. This task was meticulously planned and executed during a 72-hour shutdown to minimize disruption to rail and road traffic.
• To improve the long-term durability and functionality of the crossing, new drainage systems were installed. This step was crucial in preventing water accumulation and potential damage to the roadway and rail tracks.
• New kerb stones were installed to enhance the structural integrity and aesthetic appeal of the crossing. These kerb stones also play a vital role in guiding traffic and protecting the edges of the pavement.
• The old level crossing was replaced with a state-of-the-art Strail level crossing. This modern system is known for its high durability, excellent load distribution, and enhanced safety features.
• The final phase involved the placement of new asphalt concrete, providing a smooth and durable surface for both vehicular and rail traffic.

During the course of the project, the team encountered several challenges, including:

• Inclement Weather: A spell of bad weather posed significant challenges, delaying some aspects of the work. However, the team’s resilience and adaptability ensured that progress continued safely and efficiently.
• Deep Lift of Asphalt: An unexpected deep lift of asphalt was discovered, necessitating the use of a profiler to remove it. This unforeseen complication required quick decision-making and the mobilization of additional equipment and resources.

Despite the challenges, the project was successfully completed within the allocated shutdown period. The new Merriwa Road level crossing now features improved drainage, robust kerb stones, and a cutting-edge Strail system, ensuring enhanced safety and functionality. The diligent efforts of Finn Valley, in collaboration with Abergeldie Complex Infrastructure, resulted in a significant upgrade to this critical infrastructure, demonstrating a commitment to excellence and innovation in rail crossing solutions.
