Midcoast Council enlisted Finn Valley to construct a 200m Gabion Rock Retaining Wall on the
downslope of Stroud Hill Road as part of a larger upgrade project spanning 3.2 km in Nooroo. The
endeavor involved surveying, excavation, and construction of 1m, 2m, and 3m high Gabion Walls
using Polymac Gabion Baskets filled with 1,000m3 of gabion rock. Additionally, the project
entailed demolishing and replacing a culvert headwall for stormwater drainage.
Construction took place amidst live traffic with a one-lane contra-flow system to keep the road
accessible. Challenges arose during construction, including encountering soft and unsuitable
foundations, requiring manual labor-intensive work in hot summer conditions. Safety measures
were paramount, with precautions taken for working near traffic, in deep excavations, and at
heights. This included the use of traffic controllers, inspections by geotechnical engineers, and
installing handrails and rope harnesses in challenging areas.
Finn Valley’s project management team collaborated closely with Mid Coast Council and the
Geotechnical Engineer to address design issues and foundation challenges, minimizing delays
and costs while ensuring project success. Stroud Hill Road serves as a crucial link for local
communities, businesses, and industries. The upgrade, including the Gabion Rock Retaining
Walls, has not only widened the road but also enhanced slope stability, providing safer and
improved access for the area’s residents and industries.
