ACI – DENMAN RAIL CROSSING

Finn Valley was engaged by Abergeldie Complex Infrastructure to support them in carrying out upgrades to the Rail Crossing
at Ogilive Street, Denman to improve the overall safe access within the vicinity of the level crossing for vehicles, the general
public and pedestrians and involved significant civil works including a planned shutdown.

Project Overview:
The project encompassed several critical tasks, including the relocation of existing infrastructure and construction of new
elements to meet the required standards. The specific tasks included:

  • Culverts: Relocation of a triple cell steel pipe culvert.
  • Concrete Kerb Strail: Installation of a new concrete kerb strail.
  • Drainage: Regrading of cess open drainage and application of rock revetment scour treatments.

Finn Valley’s contract focused on demolishing and reconstructing the road approaches to the level crossing on Ogilvie Street,
following a shutdown in June. The detailed scope included:

  • Demolishing the existing road approaches, approximately 40 meters on either side of the rail crossing.
  • Reconstructing the previously failed subgrade by installing a select subgrade layer, subbase, and base course.
  • Testing and Surveying
  • Conducting conformance testing and surveys of the pavement layers in accordance with NATSPEC and Muswellbrook Shire Council standards.
  • Drainage and Kerbing
  • Installation of new cross drainage and kerb inlet pits to manage road reserve runoff.
  • Installation of subsoil drainage and extruded SA Type kerb and gutter.
  • Pedestrian Access and Safety
  • Supply and construction of a maze pedestrian level crossing and footpath approach slabs.
  • Landscaping and Finishing
  • Landscaping work, including rock scour work, importation of specialized topsoil, and turfing to meet council requirements.
  • Installation of tactile tiles and miscellaneous finishing works to the satisfaction of the council.
  • Final Preparation
  • Final trimming of the base and preparation for spray seal and asphalt pavement application.

Outcome:
The project was completed successfully, with all works meeting the specifications and standards of NATSPEC and
Muswellbrook Shire Council. The upgrades have significantly improved the infrastructure’s safety and longevity, providing
better access and drainage in the area.
